Renewal

According to the type of document with which your driver’s license is registered, you have the option to renew it in advance:

  • Panamanian ID card and passport with indefinite or permanent immigration status: You can renew up to one (1) year before the expiration date of the current driver’s license.
  • Passport with defined immigration status: You can renew up to six (6) months before the expiration date of the current driver’s license.
  • The new driver’s license will be valid from the day of issuance for up to four (4) years, as established in the traffic regulations of the Republic of Panama. The validity period is conditional if you have an active arrangement for the payment of fines.
  • The issuance of a new driver’s license cancels the previous document, rendering it invalid for driving.

National Renewal

  • Original and copy of personal identity card (valid, without damage to the plastic and seal, with legible data and photograph).

  • In case of loss of the identity card, you may present the identity card request from the Electoral Tribunal with the stamp and signature of the official.

  • Submit the current driver’s license. (If the driver’s license is not presented, you must complete the lost license report form).

  • Perform the visual and auditory validation (virtual or in-person depending on the processing method) according to the procedure established by the A.T.T.T.

  • You must be in good standing with the A.T.T.T.

  • Persons with hearing disabilities must present a medical diagnosis issued by an ENT specialist and an audiometry exam with a validity of no more than 6 months (from the date of issue). It must include the full name, personal identity number (ID or passport), signature, and fresh seal from the person issuing the diagnosis and exam results. With this documentation, the person with a hearing disability will not need to perform the auditory validation. Note: The SENADIS disability card will not be accepted as it is only valid for the economic benefits provided by Law 134 of 2013. Also, the Ministry of Health disability card will not be accepted as it is only for medical attention in the Health system.

Important:

  • Every person over the age of 85 must take the skill test according to the category(ies) on their driver’s license, so the renewal must be done at a branch where practical validation is performed. The vehicle used for the practical validation must be in good condition with a valid license plate (sticker and tag valid).

  • If elderly, disabled, pensioned, or retired, you can request your process in person without prior appointment.

  • Any person over the age of 70 may apply for a driver’s license, which will be valid for two (2) years. Additionally, they must present a physical and mental health certificate issued by a specialist in internal medicine or geriatrics. This certificate must have a validity of no more than 6 months. The document must include the full name, ID number, fresh seal, and signature of the doctor with their specialty. If the license has not been renewed for more than five (5) years, considering the expiration date of the last renewal, the person will not be able to process it online (action supported under article 116). The vehicle for practical validation must be in good condition with a valid license plate (sticker and tag valid).

  • The renewal process can be done one year before the expiration date of the current driver’s license. If you do not have the physical, valid license for renewal, you must wait 72 business hours to complete the requested process for waiting and verification of minor violations by the A.T.T.T.

  • If there is an active payment arrangement, the validity of the driver’s license will depend on the clause established with the A.T.T.T.

  • The new driver’s license will be valid for 4 years from the date of issuance, as regulated by the country’s traffic laws.

  • The payment must be made at the branch where your process is completed.

    • You can make your payment in cash, with a credit or debit card at the A.T.T.T. counters inside the Sertracen branches. It can also be made via online banking or ATM once the operator gives you the control number for your new process if you are paying by ATM.

If the process is online, your payment must be made by the following methods:

  • Through the platform with a VISA / Mastercard credit card. Also, at ATM or via online banking. If you select the Delivery method, the payment must be made with a VISA / Mastercard credit card.

  • The names, surnames, and document number must match or be identical in all documents or requirements presented. If your identity card has data modifications, you must provide the original supporting documents issued by the Electoral Tribunal.

  • All documentation provided must be valid, in good condition, without damage, with legible data and photographs, and comply with security guidelines. (Applies to all requirements).

  • The issuance of the driver’s license is conditioned upon compliance with the traffic regulations and that all requirements are valid at the time of document printing.

  • You must not have accumulated more than fifty (50) points in your driver history at the time of the process request. (Requirement by Law 146 of April 15, 2020, effective from May 15, 2020).

  • The requirements for renewal processes are conditioned on the highest category currently on your driver’s license.

  • Once the process has started, it must be completed at that branch.

Renewal of permanent foreigners and temporary stay

  • Original and copy of the migration card (valid, without damage to the plastic and seal, with legible data and photograph). If you have permanent resident status (ID E), you must present the original and copy of your personal identity card (valid, without damage to the plastic and seal, with legible data and photograph).

  • In case of loss of the identity card, you may present the identity card request from the Electoral Tribunal with the stamp and signature of the official.

  • Original passport according to the nationality described in the migration card.

    • Minor violations (pending fines must be paid, and payment arrangements must be updated to the new document number).
    • Weights and dimensions (the vehicles you own or those previously related to your name must have completed all processes, including card withdrawal and payments).
    • Traffic courts (restrictions and police reports must be resolved or updated to the new number).
  • Any foreigner registered under a limited immigration status can only apply for categories A, B, and C.

  • The issuance of the driver’s license is conditioned upon compliance with the traffic regulations and that all requirements are valid at the time of document printing; except for the passport, which must be presented in the original according to the nationality described in the migration card.
